Town and Country... sort of

Friends from Venice have sublet my NYC apartment for awhile and I have subsequently taken on what I loosely refer to as my country home.
My new upstate New York retreat is buried in snow, five foot icicles drip from the roof in front of my windows like Swarovsky crystals which is breathtakingly beautiful and convenient as I have no curtains.
I'll keep this place as a respite from the city and attempt a garden in the summer months.
I sublet my city apartment fully furnished and have been living the past few weeks with a few essentials, one chandelier, one old red velvet chair, tons of books and a mattress. I am happy.
Concerning Pixie Marie, I found her at my door, a tabby cat, a godsend I spent four glorious days with. What I did not know was that cats roam freely in the country, they are not necessarily abandoned or homeless. I saw a poster of her in the village post office as a missing cat the other day and sheepishly let her go. She continues to come crying at my door which makes me uncomfortable as I am trying to keep a low profile.
I have another Pixie Marie in mind but she will not be available until she gives birth. She is a nasty looking little mutt and I loved her on sight but have learned to take cautious steps though I will not judge her past loose behavior.
Happy belated new year to all of you, you are loved. Show up at my door and I will take you in, at least until the authorities report you missing.
Apologies to Sarcastic Bastard and Beth, I had no idea I would be making so many last minute changes in my life.
The above illustration appeared in House Beautiful.

Welcome back! I am so happy for you - it sounds like you are living sheer bliss far from the maddening crowd. Enjoy the peace and beauty surrounding you. I, on the other hand, I have to drive in this Upstate weather everyday as Oprah's financial blessing and endorsement continues to elude me; thus, I am sick of it.

Don't be a stranger,
Beth XOXO

What a charmed existence! Icicles as drapery, a chandelier to light your way and a velvet sofa!

Make the most of it!

Hmm! Red Velvet chair, chandelier, and mattress sounds divine. Except for the snow and ice, it actually reminds me of a sultry summer I once spent in New Orleans.

Dear David, your essentials sound perfect! How lovely to get away. I wait with interest to hear news of Pixie Marie.

A very happy New Year to you too xx

PS. Beautiful illustration, as always.

It can be nice to live a spartan life. It can be cleansing in various ways.

But if you want for furnishings, we have too many. Chair? Table? Computer parts? Toys? (We have way too many toys, which is why we have to think of getting rid of other things.)

Happy New Year, David. I'm envisioning you standing at your crystal icicle draped window dreaming of a summer garden. So nice to have kitties visit, too. My favorite form of company. Take care.

Who wouldn't want to stay at your place? You give names like Pixie Marie and have a red velvet chair.
Happy New Year, David. Stay warm.

I would love to sit there in the velvet chair lost in the rainbow dreams dancing through the chandelier.

David, so good to see you back, Happy New Year.

Your country retreat sounds perfect and from your comment above your are clearing feeling liberated in your new zen like lifestyle, I say zen but is a chandelier and a red velvet chair zen? No I think not. Zen with a touch of decadence, always a good thing, I am picturing you as Holly Golightly in the country!

I can't wait to hear more news of your new Pixie Marie, she is already sounding like quite a character!

Stay warm and happy and lose yourself in those piles of books.

Much love
Dash.

Oh! I am so happy to see you ! My wonderings about your new Pixie Marie are answered, and you make me dream anew of a home in the woods/countryside north of NYC.

I am currently browsing all the real estate websites in the Berkshires and around Hudson.

From Buenos Aires to Farmland in NY sounds fine to me ! no?

Muchos besos !! C~

David,
by your description, you're a delightful place, surrounded by strictly necessary: the pet, some objects
beautiful key and quiet so valuable!
starting the year in peace!
a big hug!

Your country retreat in my imagination is like the ice castle in “Dr Zhivago.” Your Lara is the passing cat or puppy – piles of books – a dream retreat that is for sure.

I'm living with a few essentials all my life.
I'm so used to live like a poor student that having more furniture than a prisoner makes me crazy.
I'm just trying to get rid of my couch and coffee table (that is already in my cellar).
Wardrobe,
lamp,
sleeper,
desk,
book shelf,
cross trainer,
video projector.
All I have and all I need in my apartement.

Great that you are back to blogging.
We missed you.

Glad to hear from you, buddy. I have been out sick with flu from work (and away from my laptop) for the past week, so I am just now catching up on my friends' blogs. Your retreat sounds just perfect to me. Enjoy it.

Happy New Year, dear David! God bless us (laugh), every one. . . .

Lovely illustration. Love the Pixie Marie story, you sound like a really cool guy. Hey any guy that likes cats is cool in my book. But I have to say, as long as you have a chandelier, who needs any thing else?

Happy New Year! Currently sitting in a fairly dark and dismal Scotland. Got room for a small one where you are?!

We definitely have the same priorities. A chandelier, a velvet chair and tons of books are all I need. Enjoy the winter wonderland. It must be so quiet and peaceful.

Venice... NY and Upstate .. they all sound good to me!! Too bad about Pixie Marie.. at least she still comes to visit...

I've been de-cluttering over my way.. so I'm liking this totally zen look... Your illustration is beautiful as ever... love the shadow play on the wall... creates life in an otherwise empty room!!!

Thanks for thinking of me David... I'm miles away from the floods and cyclone.. but life has a way of throwing curves balls at you anyway... Did I say Happy New Year ?? can't remember.. but Happy New Year... hope this one brings you much success.. in whatever way you deem life to be successful!!!

Take care... ciao xxx Julie
