Young, Dumb and not Tough

There are moments in time that can never be recaptured, nor would I want them to be, but they are fun to recall late at night upon a pillow.
Bloomingdales asked me to pick up a few designer clothes to draw which I did. I was young and my social schedule was full so I took the bag of clothes directly to the Whitney Biennial show where my friends had made a stink, literally, their piece consisted of fetal pigs in formaldehyde. It was art. Shut up PETA people, I had no idea.
We all regrouped downtown at a dive bar where Princes, models and drag queens co-mingled to celebrate.
I kept an eye on the Bloomingdales bag at all times but after glancing away for a moment it was gone. None of the guests were suspect, it was clearly the staff, the contents of the bag were worth thousands.
I asked the barmaid where it was, she looked at me as if I was some befuddled heroin addict. I asked to look behind the bar, she said no and threatened to throw me out.
I am only 5 foot 5, hardly threatening but my friends are not only beautiful, they are tough and very protective of me. They took over the situation and stormed behind the bar where the stolen bag of clothes had been hidden under a counter behind backup bottles of vodka.
Drinks suddenly became free. I miss my friends who have since scattered about the globe.
I got my bag of clothes back and drew this illustration which was printed. When you are of small stature, it pays to have scary friends.
The East Village was once a haven for artists and the disenfranchised, this video of Amy Winehouse reminds me of the streets I used to walk, she is a worry, I love her and I know she would have my back as I have hers. I look for the best in everyone I meet, I hope you see the best in her, she is my favorite kind of scary and she has a voice.

It would be nice if we could all have the kinds of friends that you describe. I'm glad you got that bag back, and wonderful illustration, too. Have a lovely weekend, David.

Oh still thinking about the clip, I worry about that girl too, so much talent ...

Great friends to have in any situation by the sounds, shame that time separates.

What a great story, New York staff are tough too!
We had a run in with the waitress in the Burger bar in The Parker Meridien ..My husband had left his very expensive phone with all our life details on..more than that we were in the process of selling our business so trans atlantic calls were being made constantly...
Anyhow they had kept it for us :) ....but ...
The people after us had left the table messy, I know we had cleared up..
She really shouted at us and was extremely scary..
I love the illustration as always xx

When I was at university I was quite a timid thing...and was taken under the wing of a big rugby playing ex SAS chap - sheer kindness, no other motive - who taught me to stand up for myself - thus my rottweiler moments I suppose - and, most importantly, to recognise the games, word and mind, that people play to assert dominance.

I still fall for stuff...but not as much as I would have done without his kindly guide to the real world.

Well out of my generation, but I too think Amy Winehouse can sing...and she needs respect and time.

What a story! How lucky you are to have friends who look out for you. It would have been awful for you if you hadn't got the clothes back.

Every time I visit you, you take my breath away.

You are more than talented, you are inspired, you make one realize what is possible when one has the gift of art, sensibility and inspiration.

Scary story - being brave isn't about height, it's about attitude. I'm sure that Amy is tiny!
Great illustration

What a sickening moment it must have been, seeing the bag gone. I'm glad your friends helped you get it back from the vile thieves!

I can only imagine how you felt when that bag went AWOL! I'm glad you had a happy ending though...
A friend of mine lost her A4 lever arch file of designers contacts that were showing at LFW and the schedule after leaving it in the back of a taxi (she was blind drunk)! That was a nightmare!

Love Amy, hope she comes back with something awesome soon!

what you speak of might be a perk of youth. once you get older and friends die, those that once had your back are no more. and they can't be replaced, not usually.

How you ever came upon my blog to comment I shall never try to figure, except it gave opportunity for me to visit you!

Around the world I have been, and found myself in many storied situations, but the City where it all happens NY--there is just none anywhere to compare. So I shall return and relive some old times.

Yes, to have people at your back (who will follow through!) is a blessing. And yes, I like!
