Ghosts of Summer

Most of my family live in upstate NY and at one time or another has owned what is called a "camp" in the Adirondacks.
Tents are not involved, "camps" are log cabins nestled in the pine scented woods overlooking a placid lake.
The Vanderbilt's bought Camp Sagamore, J. P. Morgan summered in Camp Uncas. These were rustic palaces known as "grand camps" unlike our modest, suitably named Camp Bunny.
Camp Bunny provided a child like me with all the wonderment and excitement a forest and lake could provide but my mother only imagined snakes lurking under the beds and the threat of a chipmunk attack while opening the bread box so we eventually went to a hotel.
Fortunately my cousin Jill blossomed into a glamorous stewardess, married a doctor, bought a camp on Lake Luzerne (see boathouse photo) and generously allowed me to run amok in it with a questionable NYC crowd. Those summer afternoons spent drifting on the lake were perhaps the best moments of my life.
Her camp has since been sold leaving only my cousin Amy to carry on the family tradition of happily falling down in the Adirondack woods, blaming the mishap on the obscure light provided by a full moon rather than the cocktail which was once in hand.
I rescued this old photo from my Aunt Kaki's drawer after she died. It was taken in the Adirondacks with her Brownie camera but nobody seems to know who these handsome frolickers are. I do know it captures the carefree essence of a camp and looks like a recent image from an Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue.

This was really fascinating, that time spent in your camp must have been wonderful. And how marvellous that the family tradition lives on :)

There is nothing quite like frolicking about making childhood memories for a lifetime.
I adored Marjorie Merriweather Post's Camp Topridge--now that was a camp fit for a king.
But this just proves it does not have to be gigantic and elegant in nature for you to enjoy it.
What a lovely memory David, cheers.

These summer memories are the best, aren't they. I always remember as a child in summer our annual vacation at my Grandparents. My brother and I and numerous cousins had free range on a couple of 1000 acres of creeks, rolling hills, stone fences, a railway bridge, old molluck heaps from gold mining, pine trees and the Australian bush. We were always hunting for buried treasure or caves or just plain lazing in the creek. Thanks for bringing this back.

PS. they are a couple of handsome boys!

This is what my sister and I always wished our parents had. Everyone else has a country place, why don't we?

"Because we spend 3 months in Paris every year."

Oh.

Such a rich childhood experience- memories of summer at the "camp" . Mine are the fondest, as well. We would not return to town until the day before school began. WONDERFUL post!

Those were the days. I have a picture on my blog of my grandfather holding me when I was a little girl. It was at the lakehouse in the piney woods of east texas. When my grandfather retired, they sold it. I was heartbroken. Love the photos and your illustration. It took me back to fond memories.

I wish I had a brother.
Or a sister.
Or a cousin who likes to visit me sometimes.
When we went on vacation I was always alone with my parents.
And a black poodle.
Somewhere in Spain or France.
I love our poodles.
I always did and always will.
But it's not like having brothers and sisters.
I sometimes tried to tell the poodle about my unanswered loves or school problems but she barked at me.

Love the cabin! What great times you must have had - with or without cocktails in hand. Blame the falling down on treacherous tree roots :-)

I think the photo of the two guys in the water is just wonderful - they look so strong and full of life, I wonder what happened to them...

I remember the days from my childhood when my mom used to vacation with the people she worked for. They owned a cabin in upper Michigan and I remember hanging with the owner's kids on the lake and having a grand time.

Love the picture and enjoyed your walk down memory lane.

Have a great afternoon.

I can hear the water rushing now...or is that afternoon drinks being poured. Sigh.

Hi David it sounds idyllic, am loving that photograph, your right it does look like a recent image for Abercrombie and Fitch.

Thanks for your lovely e mail, I can't reply as our interface (or whatever it is) does not send e mails to AOL, no idea why.

Hope your woes are ironed out soon and my fingers and toes are crossed that you land a big, juicy contract soon.

Whatto! There's something about water and the outdoors that we love too....luckily we live right on the Norfolk Broads in England - so our playground is also our backgarden. Tallyho!

HI David, I have looked at this photo many times and love its energy. So modern and so Bruce WEber. I see where he gets his inspiration from. Lucky you having a snap like this in the family. How divine your camps sound. Carla

I too am from upstate NY (Poughkeepsie) and my family did the 'camp' experience. Sometimes I miss those days and the tranquility of our little peace of Heaven.
