Oily Hair?

Sinéad O'Connor shaved her head before ripping up a photo of the Pope on Saturday Night Live. Mia Farrow suddenly cut off her locks after a brief marriage to Frank Sinatra, I am surprised she did not cut off her own head after Woody Allen.

The War Production Board asked Veronica Lake to sacrifice her signature "peek-a-boo" style during WWII to discourage factory women from emulating her and hence, run the risk of getting their hair caught in machinary.
The world is now faced with the lies of BP which is spilling oil into our oceans at a rate 10 times higher than they first claimed.
The truth has washed ashore killing marshlands along the Gulf Coast which is only the beginning of an environmental catastrophe.
What can we do? Apparently hair absorbs oil and can be washed and reused to absorb more, a far better solution to the toxic and untested chemicals BP has been pumping on to their mess hoping that we will not notice the sludge and gasping wildlife.
Cut your hair and save the clippings, go to Matter of Trust for details.
Thousands of boxes of hair, fur, fleece, feathers and nylons are coming in now by drop-offs from every city in North America and from donors in the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China and Brazil... it's a start.
I'll leave you with this mournful video by a much maligned and misunderstood woman who gave a voice to the abused, whether it be altar boys, the planet or the brokenhearted. The growth of untamed hair revolutionized the sixties, it's time to cut it off in protest of the bald faced lies

Unfortunately, they are no longer allowing hair to be used in booms, or at least that's what i read in the news this morning. I have NO idea what is going to be done to stop this mess. It really bothers me because I have a house on the gulf, right next to Dauphin Island where the majority of it is.
On a brighter note (ha) I LOVE sinead! Always have. Yes she's weird but her voice, so haunting! Her face is so pretty she looks good bald. great post. :)

What an amazing idea, I am really quite moved by it. It is a true illustration of human ingenuity and how, in times of great catastrophe, we can all unite and find a way of saving our only home in creation. Wonderful post, thank you for introducing me to this cause.

Great approach, funny, clever and another fabulous illustration. I LOVE Sinead quirks and all. Her beauty leaves you breathless. and that song is unequaled. Merci. oh, and what will happen to all the hair, fur etc. if clean up is ever achieved? I guess it's the much lesser of 2 evils, right now.

What a curious and fascinating post. I once had long hair... and would gladly that it be of use, rather than swept into the bin. I very much enjoyed both books you're reading as well. Hmm, and that song of Sinead's, quite a favorite and it does rather hit a chord for me as it has been... 5 weeks now? But, the tears are no longer falling, and my new spare time is filling with ease.

I have an appointment for a haircut this Tuesday and just found out that my salon is saving & donating clippings, which makes me happy. (I may go a wee bit shorter than I originally planned!) I hope they're still going to be able to find a use for it.

I have a blog friend who lives by the beach near where the oil is gushing out, the lies and sheer stupidity that is going on is just unbelievable. Words cannot explain the moronic behaviour that is allowed to pass in this situation.

Love the concerned look on the face of your delightful illustration.I think I'd be looking a bit worried too..

This whole issue with the oil spill and the damage it is wreaking is beyond comprehension and I do sincerely hope things improve soon... The collection of hair is a fascinating idea.. maybe we should all tell our hairdressers to collect their leftovers!!! Thanks for letting us know x Julie

Great post - the war worker's hairdo story is interesting.
The Matter of Trust website does say that they have enough hair at the moment. I hope they can send the booms quickly to where they are needed. This oil spill is a tragedy. How not to get angry with the greedy bastards who caused it all?

Anyway David thanks for your visit on my Avignon blog - you made me laugh with your comment about sheep making uncooperative models. Looking at the lovely illustrations on your blog, I doubt you've used them as models very often though! :-)

I'm putting your blog in my favorites now. I'll make sure I come back often. Your work is uplifting.

I take pictures because I can't draw and paint well enough. It's a second-best option. Looking at your work (I went way back into your previous posts) is inspiring and nurturing, as talent always is. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I think it is shocking the way BP fat cats have handled this oil spill. did not know about the hair thing will check out the link.

Once when I was broken hearted I listened to that track by Sinead O connor over and over, the lyrics perfectly reflected how I was feeling at the time.

I have only had my hair cut short once in my life, I was about ten and it had to be cut after an unfortunate incident involving bubble gum! I was so upset with the result I vowed never to have short hair again.

i'd imagine the hair would quite literally be just a drop in the ocean, thanks david for your comment, i like that idea of experimenting with the black glass mirror. hope your head is ok now. elaine , DC ( she says, feigning nonchalance that NYC is in the house)

Hello David! Thanks for visiting my blog! So I've been able to discover yours, a gorgeous blog! I love it. I heard this story about using hairs to absorb the oil in the ocean, and it's great! I really hope this will solve as soon as possible this tragedy. Unfortunately we all know that it won't be so easy, as to give a cut at our hair..But let's be positive! And let's take a pair of scissors..;-) Be back soon! msbx

Cut it off in protest or cut it off to help clean it all up? I'm not sure which one you're advocating more (though I can see the reasoning for both, and arguments against each). Hm. If I was doing it, I'd say it was a protest against the lies but I'm not sure that'd be the truth. And how many of us would it take going bald to fix the leak?

DAVID McGRIEVEY said...

Dear Aut,
Nobody has to go bald, especially not my dear friends who have suffered hair loss due to chemo or a traumatic gum incident, although I am sure they would be first in line if it would miraculously solve this environmental crisis. The website I referred people to only requires clippings, the amount is up to you and at this moment has more than they can handle due to storage.
Shortly after 9/11 I volunteered at ground zero and had to wear purple surgical gloves and a floral shower cap over my hair to serve scrambled eggs to the rescue workers at five in the morning. Nobody there believed we were fixing the problem or gave a shit what we looked like, we were just doing our best.
I suspect you are young Aut, I envy you, this is not the time for a philosophical debate.

Hi David:
Thanks for joining my blog and if you let me I will visit yours. Your work reminds me of Coco Channely to pictures from magazines that my mother made me read when was child. The feminine and slender, but I love and with such strong colors that give it life. Ah! Sindney O'Connor, reminds me of when I cut my hair, after a heartbreak AJAJAJA
Hugs sincere and see you then.

This is the biggest mess. I think that's a wonderful idea about the hair, but I feel that the big wigs at BP should be the first to shave their heads.

Have a great weekend.

I think that this is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written. Sinead's rendition is amazing.

I just had to come back and thank you for the wonderfully encouraging comments you left on my blog. I take that as a very high compliment coming from someone as talented as you are.

Have a great weekend, my friend.
