I have never attended the Kentucky derby. I do however show my face at the meets of Saratoga as much as possible.
I occasionally wager small bets but it is not one of my vices as I have never experienced the addictive exhilaration that follows a win.
The odds are always in my favor if I settle for outrageous hats, good company and Mint Juleps.
Here I have illustrated the equestrian tracks for Town and Country. I dedicate this post to my cousin Melissa who as a child, begged me to draw horses for her, and to my cousin Kelly who loves a good cocktail recipe...
MINT JULEP
2 fluid ounces Early Times Kentucky Whisky
1 tablespoon simple syrup
fresh mint sprigs
crushed ice
silver mug and straw
Please drink in this Cecil Beaton racetrack image from My Fair Lady of Audrey Hepburn before you imbibe.

not sure about the first hat... but Audrey sure wears hers well... such a star! Have a lovely May Day.. Julie
You know, I'm partial to hats. Have a ton of them. But the whole crazy big hat thing? I never got it because it really doesn't make the woman look good. Sorry Audrey, not even you can pull that look off.
great pics!

nice hat... kisses from mexico
David, I am longing to go to the races, there are none in my neck of the woods, I am not able to go to Royal Ascot this year, so I am going to try to get to Ebor Day at the York meet in August. Really it's just an excuse to dress up, wear a big hat and swill Champagne all day, with a few bets thrown in for good measure, based on nice looking horses and silks in my preferred colours or failing that earwigging the professional gamblers!
Love your illustration and I saw My Fair Lady for the first time when I was about seven, that was when I realised how special Audrey Hepburn was! Not to mention Cecil Beatons wonderful designs.
Audrey was so beautiful...
Regards,
D.Blanch
Audrey Hepburn is a goddess! Love the ginormous hats, but I can't stand mint julips. Lovely blog!

Delightful illustration!
I must confess to having worn a rather extravagant hat on Saturday. Not as fetchingly as Audrey perhaps, but then, who could?

Just lovely!

i'm in love with audrey :)
The whole Ascot scene in My Fair Lady leaves me visually poleaxed -- absolutely stunned. It is so overwhelmingly good. I don't think Beaton could have gotten away with all the ravishing detail he packed in there if he hadn't been working in that limited black & white palette, do you? It would have been too much to take in.
David,
It's a week later and I'm watching Preakness at this very moment. No divine hat or mint julep. I'm missing half the fun.
Catherine
